The Importance of Professional Sandblasting and Prep in Industrial Coatings

April 16, 20263 min read

In the world of commercial vehicle painting, the final coat of paint is only as good as the surface beneath it. While it is tempting to focus on the shiny new color and the fresh logos, the real work happens long before the spray gun is ever picked up. At Ontario Industrial Coatings, we know that professional preparation is the single most important factor in determining how long a paint job will last.

With over 35 years of experience and a professional body license, our founder Jeff Webb has seen firsthand what happens when shops cut corners on prep work. Here is why professional sanding and sandblasting are non-negotiable steps in our process.

Removing the Hidden Enemies: Rust and Corrosion

Commercial vehicles, especially transport trucks and garbage trucks in Southwestern Ontario, face constant exposure to salt, moisture, and road chemicals. Over time, these elements create microscopic pockets of rust and oxidation.

If you simply paint over these areas, the corrosion will continue to grow underneath the new finish. Within months, you will see bubbling, peeling, and flaking. Professional sandblasting strips the metal down to a clean, white surface, removing every trace of rust and old, failing paint. This ensures that the new industrial coating is bonding directly to solid metal, not to a layer of decay.

Creating a Mechanical Bond

Metal is naturally smooth, which can make it difficult for heavy-duty industrial paints to stick. Sandblasting does more than just clean the surface; it creates a "profile" or a microscopic texture on the metal.

This texture acts like a series of tiny hooks that the primer and paint can grab onto. This mechanical bond is what allows our finishes to withstand the high-pressure washes, extreme temperature swings, and physical impacts that commercial fleets endure every day. Without this step, the paint is merely sitting on top of the metal rather than becoming a part of it.

Identifying Structural Issues Early

One of the greatest benefits of a thorough prep stage is that it reveals the true condition of the vehicle. Thick layers of old paint and road grime can hide cracks in the metal, thinning areas, or failing welds.

Because we are licensed body repair experts, our preparation process includes a full assessment of the vehicle’s integrity. If we find a dent that needs pulling or a section that requires professional welding and straightening, we handle it right then and there. We don't just cover up problems; we fix them.

Doing It Right the First Time

Our favourite quote at the shop is: "There is never time to do it right but always time to do it over." Skipping professional sandblasting might save a few hours in the short term, but it leads to a finish that fails prematurely, costing you more in downtime and repainting fees later on.

When you bring your fleet to our Woodstock facility, you are getting a process that has been fine-tuned over three decades. We take the time to prep your vehicles properly because we take pride in seeing our work stay on the road, looking brand new, for years to come.
